A comprehensive collection of the most relevant topics related to
rock mechanics and geo-engineering in volcanic environments,

instabilities in volcanic islands: slope stability, large
landslides and collapse phenomena; geoengineering and
infrastructures in volcanic environments.
The handbook provides an understanding of consolidated processing
and biorefinery systems for the production of bio-based chemicals
and value-added bioproducts from renewable sources. The chapters
look at a variety of bioenergy technological advances and
improvements in the energy and materials sectors that aim to lower
our dependence of fossil fuels and consequently reduce greenhouse
gas (GHG) emissions. The volume looks at a selection of processes
for the production of energy and biomaterials, including the
Fischer-Tropsch process, gasification, pyrolysis, combustion,
fermentation from renewable sources (such as, plants, animals and
their byproducts), and others. Applications that are explored
include transportation fuels, biodiesel production, wastewater
treatment, edible packaging, bioplastics, physical rehabilitation,
tissue engineering, biomedical applications, thermal insulation,
industrial value compounds, and more. All of the topics covered in
this publication address consolidated processes that play a pivotal
role in the production of bioenergy and biomaterials because these
processes require fewer unitary operations needed in the process,
leading to a more direct method of production. This type of
production system contributes to decreasing negative effects on the
environment, lowering costs, saving energy and time, and improving
profitability and efficiency. This volume will be valuable for the
industrial sector, for researchers and scientists, as well as for
faculty and advanced students.

is a comprehensive collection of the most relevant topics related
to rock mechanics and geo-engineering in volcanic environments,
including: - Geomechanical characterization of volcanic materials;-
Instabilities in volcanic islands: Slope stability, large
landslides and collapse phenomena;- Geoengineering and
infrastructures in volcanic environments;- Construction materials.

Gustave Roud, perhaps the most beloved poet of Swiss Romandy, is
widely considered the founder of modern francophone Swiss
literature, along with Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz. Roud lived at his
grandfather's farm in Carrouge, Canton Vaud, for his entire life.
In Air of Solitude, the first section of this two-part book, he
stalks the structures and fields of his youth, composing memories
out of his landscape. The narrator appears homegrown, expressing
nostalgia for what is already in front of him. Yet, like an
outsider, he remains distinctly elsewhere, unable to participate in
the workday rituals of the men around him--a stalking shadow of
unfulfilled yearning for affection and belonging. Air of Solitude
explores the rural bodies and lives of the Vaudois, returning again
and again to the desired male laborer Aime. Between each section of
Air of Solitude, Roud inserts short vignettes that provide fleeting
and lyrical images that resemble allusions to half-forgotten
memories. However, Roud leaves the relationship between the titled
sections and the interludes ambiguous. As the book concludes with
Requiem, the remnants of narrative shatter, leaving behind only the
spectral tatters of memory as Roud confronts the enigma of loss in
peerless, jewel-studded elegiac prose. With these two tales, Roud
revives the pastoral tradition and injects it with distinctly
modernist anxiety and disillusionment.

In this powerful collection of free-verse poetry, immigrant, poet,
and memoirist Jose Antonio Rodriguez encapsulates the experiences
of an artist and citizen caught between two worlds. At once deeply
personal and thematically expansive, these works offer a bracing
look at the darker impulses of contemporary America. Saturated with
allusions to family, immigration, sexuality, and violence, This
American Autopsy is also an unsettling meditation on life and
death. With its provocative title, the collection calls to mind an
image of our nation as a body awaiting examination to determine the
cause of death. In this scenario the poet vacillates between
various roles: coroner, pathologist, and the body itself. Some of
the poems in this collection look to the past: events such as the
Space Shuttle Challenger explosion or the author's first trip to an
American grocery store. Others muse on more recent tragedies,
including the racial violence in Ferguson, Missouri, and the
illicit drug trade. A few of the poems are written in Spanish, and
the volume concludes with two English translations of these poems,
which the author originally wrote in his native language. Even as
he paints a vivid picture of American diversity, Rodriguez exposes
the deterioration of our nation - broken promises, failed
prosperity, the shattering of dreams. Intimate and urgent, these
timely dispatches from the Texas-Mexico border reveal the tensions
and contradictions of today's America.
The year is 2009, and Jose Antonio Rodriguez, a doctoral student at
Binghamton University in upstate New York, is packing his suitcase,
getting ready to spend the Thanksgiving holiday with his parents in
South Texas. He soon learns from his father that a drug cartel has
overtaken the Mexican border village where he was born. Now,
because of the violence there, he won't be able to visit his
early-childhood home. Instead, his memories will have to take him
back. Thus, Rodriguez begins a meditative journey into the past.
Through a series of vignettes, he mines the details of a childhood
and adolescence fraught with deprivation but offset by moments of
tenderness and beauty. Suddenly he is four years old again, and his
mother is feeding him raw sugarcane for the first time. With the
sweetness still on his tongue, he runs to a field, where he falls
asleep under a glowing pink sky. The conditions of rural poverty
prove too much for his family to bear, and Rodriguez moves with his
mother and three of his nine siblings across the border to McAllen,
Texas. Now a resident of the ""other side,"" Rodriguez experiences
the luxury of indoor toilets and gazes at television commercials
promising more food than he has ever seen. But there is no easy
passage into this brighter future. Poignant and lyrical, House
Built on Ashes contemplates the promises, limitations, and
contradictions of the American Dream. Even as it tells a deeply
personal story, it evokes larger political, cultural, and social
realities. It speaks to what America is and what it is not. It
speaks to a world of hunger, prejudice, and far too many
boundaries. But it speaks, as well, to the redemptive power of
beauty and its life-sustaining gift of hope.

Statistics is a key characteristic that assists a wide variety of
professions including business, government, and factual sciences.
Companies need data calculation to make informed decisions that
help maintain their relevance. Design of experiments (DOE) is a set
of active techniques that provides a more efficient approach for
industries to test their processes and form effective conclusions.
Experimental design can be implemented into multiple professions,
and it is a necessity to promote applicable research on this
up-and-coming method. Design of Experiments for Chemical,
Pharmaceutical, Food, and Industrial Applications is a pivotal
reference source that seeks to increase the use of design of
experiments to optimize and improve analytical methods and
productive processes in order to use less resources and time. While
highlighting topics such as multivariate methods, factorial
experiments, and pharmaceutical research, this publication is
ideally designed for industrial designers, research scientists,
chemical engineers, managers, academicians, and students seeking
current research on advanced and multivariate statistics.
The idea was to create a book useful for the day to day work as a
consulting guide. To do so we created a book with a lot of code and
explanations of the most common and not so common options that can
help into the graphics production. All the figures presented in the
book contain the code to be able to replicate, always using data
available for everybody, such us using SASHELP library or
generating our own data. At the same time, we tried that was
accessible for all levels. It goes from a really basic level,
explaining the SG procedures (SGPLOT, SGSCATTER and SGPANEL) and
increasing in complexity little by little, showing how to extract
the GTL code from the SG procedures, introducing PROC TEMPLATE and
the different layouts, until we reach the final chapter where we
create the shells for the most common figures, using all the
learned to create common output requests.
